Worst Science Fiction Films Ever Made

There are some seriously good sci-fi movies that remain popular throughout the decades. They're iconic, thought-provoking masterpieces that make the entire film genre look amazing.

That being said, many movie critics believe that for every truly great sci-fi masterpiece, there's about 10 terrible movies that will make you cringe, sigh in boredom, or just laugh out loud. This is because it's really easy to make a bad movie in the sci-fi genre.

Bad movies in the science fiction genre are plentiful, so to have a movie get called one of the worst science fiction films ever made is kind of impressive. That being said, the following bad movies have been regularly cited as the worst science fiction films ever made.

Jurassic Shark (2012)

Jurassic Shark is what happens when movie directors and producers want to rip off two major blockbuster films, but don't have talented writers, good CGI, or even decent actors to do it right.

The monster of this sci-fi blunder is a CGI shark that probably would have been better just being played by a pool float from K-Mart. The people starring in it? You've never heard of them. The shark villain? Well, it's a megalodon that got "awakened" due to corporate greed.

The plot doesn't make sense, the shark sucks, and the actors are horrible. Fail? Yes. That's why it's one of the worst science fiction films ever made.

King Dinosaur (1955)

The 1950s were a magical time when super low budget films were literally made with a maximum of $1000. King Dinosaur might just be the king of all low budget films.

As the title somewhat suggests, this sci-fi film involves astronaut scientists finding a terrifying alien dinosaur. However, producers really didn't have the money it'd take to get a giant dinosaur on film - but they did have enough cash to get an iguana.

So, they filmed King Dinosaur using closeups of an iguana. Oh, and they also had poorly made T-Rex props, too. The acting is equally bad, and the fact is that it's one of the worst science fiction films ever made. Even so, it's so bad it's hilarious.

The Roller Blade Seven (1991)

The Roller Blade Seven is one of those terrible movies that's so bad, it's just perplexing. This also low budget movie somehow manages to involve ninjas, scantily clad women, really bad martial arts scenes, and roller skaters. Yes, roller skaters.

Why roller skaters? Because, teenagers think skaters are cool, or something. There's really no reason or rhyme to the story at all, which makes it all the weirder.

The plot, literally, makes zero sense whatsoever. Moreover, they reuse the same scenes multiple times throughout the series. It's so bad, it's not even funny. It's just perplexing. That's why many critics call this one of the worst filmed movies ever made - and one of the worst science fiction films ever.

Robot Monster (1953)

When you think of a "robot monster," you probably think of a terminator-like creature that is fully metal, vicious, and terrifying. The titular character of Robot Monster is nothing like that. It's a guy in a gorilla suit with a "fish tank" space helmet on top of his head.

In the film, the monster (called a Ro-Man, short for "robot man") kills all the people but a handful of people with a bubble death ray – who are immune to his bubble beam death ray. Unfortunately, the robot that killed most of Earth fell in love with a survivor by the name of Alice. Now, he has to save the world from the moon robots - or something. The plot makes little sense, even among seriously terrible alien movies.

Laughably bad character design aside, the bad conversations, the ultimately awful plot, and just the insane levels of 50s camp made this a regular star among lists of the worst sci-fi films ever made. It's even nicknamed the "baddest of the B's" among critics.

Eegah! (1962)

This 60s horror-shock-sci-fi gem is one that has regularly been called one of the "most disgusting movies ever made." That being said, that gross factor really didn't help the overall quality of the film - as it's not even a good splatter film.

This sci-fi movie is all about a Neanderthal caveman that lives in California, who falls in love with a human girl. The girl gets saved by California police officers who shoot the last living Neanderthal to pieces.

Does this make sense? No? Of course not. But, plots don't really matter much when it comes to making a list of the worst sci-fi films ever made. In fact, they're supposed to be terrible and nonsensical.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

There have been a number of Christmas-themed sci-fi movies, and all of them were really bad movies, to be honest. But, this one had to make the list to represent that entire bad subgenre, simply because it's so laughably pathetic.

The plot involves Martians kidnapping Santa because Martian kids only got to see Santa on TV. What else could Santa do, aside from conquer the Martians? Have a peaceful chat with them and offer to do Christmas some other time? Absolutely not. That's too Christmassy for Santa.

The badness of this movie has landed it on about a dozen critics' lists as one of the worst science fiction films ever made.

Garbage Pail Kids (1987)

Back in the 80s,Garbage Pail Kids were a major brand. They had trading cards featuring gross-out characters. They had creepy looking dolls. They were a big, big trend. So, why not make a movie?

In theory, this was great. The only problem is that the movie that was made featuring the kids was absolute garbage. Garbage Pail Kids was one of the only films on Rotten Tomatoes to receive a 0 percent rating.

When you have the Garbage Pail Kids being a group of aliens that are beamed down to earth in a garbage can, you know it's going to be bad. Also, there's something incredibly cringe-inducing about watching a main character get saved from bullies by little people in foam suits that are playing garbage-mutant space aliens.

Do we really have to explain why this is one of the worst science fiction films ever made?

Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)

When most people think of the worst science fiction films ever made, the first title they often will think of is Plan 9 from Outer Space. This movie has it all - horrible acting, aliens with evil plans that make no sense whatsoever, alien zombies for no apparent reason, as well as spaceship flying scenes that are literally made from pie dishes being dangled by a string.

Every single trope that has ever existed about bad sci-fi movies is in this film, and not in an ironic way. It's just laughably bad, and it's so bad that it's famous for being bad. In its own, messed up way, Plan 9 from Outer Space is a masterpiece in how awful moviemaking can really be.
