Chapter One: New Face

February 14th, 2005 is the day that everything went to shit. In 2003, the president issued WW3 against Russia and China. By 2004, most of the population had been wiped out from atomic bombs and radiation. For one couple, Takumi Haruto and Erika Takumi, this was hell on Earth.

"Come on, Erika we are almost there." Haruto helped Erika on top of a car. Los Angeles was a wasteland. Nothing for miles, but there were planes nearby and they had to keep moving.

"Haruto, where's Haruko? He said he'd be here..." Erika complained. Haruko is Haruto's older brother, there is a hospital still standing and in use.

"Let's go. He'll find us... I hope.." Haruto and Erika walked for days before spotting a young child trapped in a car.

"HELP US!!!! HELP!!!!" this stupid woman ran out into the streets screaming and gaining the attention of a bomber jet. Erika looked up and looked at the child.

"We have to save the ch-" the bomber spotted the woman and aimed directly towards her.

"Hide!" Haruto grabbed Erika and ran away from the area. Erika looked back at the child, however now there was no child.

"What? Impossible.. There was a child in the car..."

Haruto looked at Erika, "there was no child in that car."

"No way. There had to be! He looked just like-ugh!" There was a bright flash and the ground shook in terror. The flash had vaporized the screaming woman into nothing but ash and Haruto took Erika's hand and hid in a hole in the ground. The bomb attracted others to the area, bombs were hitting the ground like rain. Erika's body couldn't hold anymore, she dropped to the ground, coughing up blood.

"No-no-no...Come on Erika. We're almost there..." Haruto didn't know what to do.

"Haruto! Is that you?" He turned around the see his brother and a few others.

"Niichan! She doesn't have much time left. Daniel, come help me lift her!" Haruko carried her to the hospital and ran immediately to the operating table.

"Wait outside Haruto. You’ll soon see a new face in a few hours. "

Meanwhile, Haruto went outside and wandered around. He stumbled upon an infant laying on the ground, Haruto quickly ran over.

"Hey. Hey- oh my god..." Haruto looked up and saw a man hunched over, staring at him. The man looked exactly like Haruto; messy black hair with blue highlights, shining green eyes- even the small mole by his right eye.

"Who...Who are you? Why do you look like me!?" The man looked up and said," I'm you, from a different time. That child- my son...Take him. He will survive here. I don't have much time- and take this. You'll need it someday... His name is Ihsorih." The man fell to the ground, Haruto tried to feel his pulse but it was no use. The man had died, leaving his son with Haruto.

Chapter Two: Paradise Lost

“What the hell do I do with him?” Looking down at Shiro, worried about Erika, Haruto headed back to the hospital.

“Where have you been?! Where’d that child come from?!” Haruto’s brother proclaimed, frightening the child.

“There was a man dying and he told me to save his newborn child. It looks like he is about a day old.” Haruto explained. Haruko took Haruto to see Erika, lying on the table- lifeless.

“No!! Erika! No, please- wake up!!”

Erika’s body couldn't withstand the radiation anymore. She died while giving birth to a baby boy. Haruto heard a faint cry on the other side of the table.

“Haruko… is that?” Haruto tears started to flow down his black-stained cheeks. Streaks landed on the baby like rain, he picked up the baby and held him; just crying.

The sounds outside were like silence capturing the threads of life one by one. Empty streets of chaos and empty streets of death. Nothing left to remember the earth by. The only safe places left on this planet were secretly sealed off to protect only a number of people. However, there's one on Catalina Island, off the coast of California. It is still open.

“Haruto, it isn't safe here. We have to go to Catalina Island,” Haruko said as he helped his brother up.

“Let’s go. Bring Shiro’s necklaces too,” he responded, wiping his tears with his sleeve and getting into the tunnel towards the docks.

“Since we were at the closest hospital to the docks, it will take us about two hours to reach the docks. Haruto, you sure about taking care of both boys? I can take Shirohi off your hands.” Haruko insisted that Shiro would be better off with him. Haruto shot a dirty glare at his brother.

“No. I promised Shiro’s father that I would take care of him. But you could carry one of them at least. Hiroshi is heavy…” Haruto replied.

“Hiroshi? That's what you're gonna call him? And then there is Shirohi.”

“Stop calling him that. His name is Shiro.” Haruko sneered at his younger brother.

“Ihsorih… is the reverse of Hiroshi. So let's call him - Shirohi.”

Haruko was right, Shirohi’s name is Hiroshi backward, why is that? Haruto thought.

“It smells in here… Haruko, how much longer? The babies haven't eaten anything.” Haruko looked at them and sighed. Their cries echoed through the tunnelways, Haruto’s ears were practically bleeding. He put down his backpack on a pipe and searched inside for bottles.

“Ah. Here we go. Powder and bottles. But we have no water.” Haruko looked ahead and saw a leaking pipe. Haruto led the way towards the leak, he put some of the liquid on his fingers and put it in his mouth.

“Fresh water pipes. And it's warm.” They filled up the bottles, mixed two spoonfuls of the powder inside and shook the bottles.

“Shh- Shh. Here you go, boys.” Haruko took Shirohi and fed him while still heading forwards. What seemed like days were only minutes. Haruto’s head was spinning and Haruko's stomach was empty.

“Are we lost?” Haruto asked hoping for some good news.

“We might be but think about it, no bombs down here. This is paradise!”

“Yeah- Paradise Lost…” Haruto snickered.
